Siamo negli anni Venti del nuovo secolo e millennio. E cent’anni fa cominciava a nascere, nel nostro Paese, una curiosa, distesa, eclettica generazione di personalità critiche che – tra lingua e letteratura, filologia e strutturalismo, teoria e comparatistica, psicanalisi e sociologia, narratologia e semiologia, estetica della ricezione e storia della cultura... – avrebbe tenuto a battesimo una buona parte dei nostri studi letterari, nelle università e non solo, fino a oggi. In circa ventuno anni – dal 24 marzo del 1920, in cui viene alla luce Cesare Cases, al 6 dicembre del 1940, data di nascita di Romano Luperini – abbiamo provato a selezionare cinquantadue temperamenti critici, con Adelia Noferi, Lea Ritter Santini, Delia Frigessi, Lidia De Federicis, Maria Luisa Doglio, Grazia Cherchi, Rosanna Bettarini e Teresa de Lauretis come sole ma eloquenti rappresentanti di un plurale pensiero femminile, capace già – pur in seno a una minore rappresentanza figlia dell’epoca – di passare da una critica più accademica e teorica a una più militante e didattica, capace di dirsi all’università come nell’editoria, tra commento ai testi, impegno civile e studi di genere, tra Italia, Europa e America.

Si tratta perciò di un volumetto denso ma abbastanza agile, che forse potrebbe dare inizio a una piccola serie prospettica (1941- 1960, per dire), intesa già qui non solo e non tanto come omaggio, ma come profilo di una politica (fra molte virgolette, ma anche senza virgolette) delle critiche e dei critici nel secondo Novecento e all’alba più o meno sfrangiata e irta del nuovo secolo e millennio che stiamo vivendo. Ecco, il volume che avete fra le mani non è solo un omaggio ai maestri e un profilo dei maggiori critici italiani del secondo Novecento – magari con qualche dimenticanza, di cui chiediamo venia: il canone è tanto provvisorio quanto ampio, e vuole tendere all’oggettività, ma risente (come è inevitabile e tutto sommato giusto) delle passioni, delle curiosità, e forse pure delle idiosincrasie, peraltro diversissime, dei curatori. La critica viva – questo è il punto – ha anche un’ambizione etica e appunto politica, che si dipana tra insegnamento, ricerca e società: contesta il crescente (e sciagurato) abbandono, nelle università, della storia della critica; rende evidente la capacità degli studi letterari di incidere sul discorso sociale, contribuendo – con la loro libertà e diversità – a restituire nel suo insieme più ricca, meno provinciale, più complessa un’intera cultura; rivendica il contributo imprescindibile che le studiose e gli studiosi di letteratura hanno dato al Novecento italiano e (forse) ancora sono in grado di dare.

We are now twenty years and more into the new millennium. A hundred years ago, a wide-ranging generation of innovative literary critics began to emerge in our country. Curious and eclectic, they operated between language and literature, philology and structuralism, theory and comparative literature, psychoanalysis and sociology, narratology and semiology, the aesthetics of reception and cultural history... They have been holding sway to this day over a good part of our literary studies, in universities and beyond. In this book we have selected fifty-two original critical temperaments, chosen in a period of about twenty-one years – from March 24, 1920, when Cesare Cases was born, to December 6, 1940, the date of birth of Romano Luperini. Amongst them Adelia Noferi, Lea Ritter Santini, Delia Frigessi, Lidia De Federicis, Maria Luisa Doglio, Grazia Cherchi, Rosanna Bettarini and Teresa de Lauretis as the few representatives of a diverse feminine tradition, already liable – in spite of their limited numbers, a consequence of the times under scrutiny – to switch from academic and theoretical criticism to a more militant and pedagogical one, equally at home within the university as in the publishing world, mixing textual commentary, civil commitment and gender studies, between Italy, Europe and America.

This little volume is therefore both rather dense and fairly agile; it could possibly develop into a small series, looking for example into the years 1941-1960, intended not only and not so much as simply a tribute, but rather as an outline of a politics (with or without quotation marks) of criticism and critics in the second half of the twentieth century and at the more or less frayed and fraught dawn of the new century and millennium we are now living through. The volume you hold in your hands is not just a testimonial to the masters and a sketch of the major Italian critics of the second half of the 20th century – perhaps with a few omissions, for which we ask for your forgiveness: the canon is as provisional as it is broad, and strives to achieve objectivity, but is inevitably affected by the passions, curiosities and perhaps also the very different idiosyncrasies of the editors. And that, after all, is as it should be. Living Criticism – this is the main point – has also an ethical and indeed political ambition, which unfolds between teaching, research and society: it challenges the increasing (and wretched) neglect of the history of criticism in universities; it highlights literary studies’ ability to influence social discourse, contributing – with their freedom and diversity – to making an entire culture richer, less provincial and more complex; it celebrates the indispensable contributions that literary scholars have made to the Italian twentieth century and are (perhaps) still able to make.
